Cupping is a technique especially useful in treating channel problems resulting in localized stagnation of Qi, or to help expel external pathogenic factors such as wind or cold. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Qi is the natural energy or life-force present within the human body.
Cupping Targets Specific Areas with Vacuum
A vacuum is created by burning a flame for a very short time inside a glass cup and then immediately placing the cup down over the selected area. Because the flame exhausted oxygen in the cup, a vacuum is created. The effect of this is to encourage the flow of the Qi and blood in the area beneath the cup. Cupping naturally draws blood to the external capillaries of the body and as result a minor bruise may be left after a treatment.
